In an exciting development for the medical community, the newly formed McCune Smith Cordiace Medical Society (MCSC) is proud to welcome two distinguished individuals, Dr. Joanne Dempster and Dr. Nicole Dumas, into its fold. Dr.
Louis Auguste, the society’s founder, expressed his pleasure at their interest in joining and anticipates their significant contributions to the organization.
The MCSC aims to provide a platform for physicians of color to support one another in the practice of medicine, mentor the next generation of healthcare professionals from diverse backgrounds, and address the critical issue of equitable access to quality medical care in underserved communities.
At the society’s inaugural meeting, attended by 130 physicians, the vision and potential of the organization were enthusiastically embraced. Generous contributions from pioneering physicians such as Dr. George Angus, Dr. Anthony Joseph, and Dr. James Satterfield, among others, made the meeting possible. Their commitment to the cause highlights the importance of supporting initiatives that promote diversity and inclusivity in healthcare.
Despite the promising start, Dr. Auguste emphasized the need for continued participation and support from all members to realize the society’s goals fully. The membership committee, led by Dr. Roxanne Connell, has developed a form to gather essential information from members, including geographic location, contact details, and specialty training. This data will facilitate communication and collaboration among members, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
In addition to providing demographic information, the form also includes a request for dues payment, deliberately set at a low level of $200 for active members and $100 for retired members. Dr. Auguste underscored the importance of financial support from members to sustain the society’s activities and encouraged prompt payment of dues.
Despite initial expectations, the response to the membership form and dues payment has been lower than anticipated, with only 31 physicians completing the form and 17 paying their dues thus far. Dr. Auguste urged all members to prioritize their involvement in the society and contribute to its success.
As the MCSC continues to grow and evolve, its founders and members remain committed to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in healthcare and making a positive impact on the communities they serve.
